Custom Knives Basic Process
-
Blades are either cut out by hand or profiled by hand after water-jet blanks give the rough shape.
-
Blades are rough beveled before heat treatment.
-
Handle holes are then drilled in the steel.
-
Surfacing ground/ tapered to thickness with a 220 grit finish.
-
Stamp is put in with a shop press.
-
Blades are typically heat treated in house through cryo and temper; however, a quantity of blades maybe sent to BOS Heat Treating. Here they are heat treated in a vacuum furnace, cryo treated and tempered to our requested hardness.
-
Blades are then beveled by hand using a mist system to keep them cool while grinding.
-
Handle holes are drilled in the handle material.
-
Finish grinds are put on the bevels.
-
Handle is fit-up to the blade.
-
Final finish is put on the blade before attaching the handle.
-
Handle fronts are finish sanded and handle is attached to the knife. Occasionally the handle is completely finished before final finishing of the blade.
-
Final contouring and finishing of the handle.
-
Sheath is made.
-
Blade is sharpened.
